Service Need
In December 2018, Aktion Club Advisor, Jaimie Neuringer told the club about the NY District Governor’s Project to send military kampers to Kamp Kiwanis in Taberg, NY . She told the Aktion Club members that the Kamp also provided inclusive opportunities for children with special needs to attend Kamp. The Brighton Aktion Club voted to sent a special needs child to Kamp & create a service project “Upcycled Super Crayons” to raise funds.
Project Plan
The planning process for this service project included several discussions with the members. The Brighton Aktion Club discussed various craft ideas that they could make to sell as a fundraiser. Once the group decided on creating Upcycled Super Crayons, they determined where to get the broken crayons, how many to make, different style ideas, packaging methods, and where to sell them.
Project Implementation
This single service project consisted of 12 one hour meetings throughout this year. Additional hours of collecting the broken crayons were incurred by members of the Brighton Kiwanis Key Clubs. In December 2018, all Aktion Club members participated in the project discussion & created a poster to give to the Key Clubs to post at their schools to collect broken & old crayons. During February & March 2019, the Brighton Aktion Club members collected the 45lbs of old crayons from the Key Club and spent 3 meetings sorting them by color & removing the wrappers. The next step was to break up the crayons and place the small pieces into the various silicon molds. During 3 meetings in April, the Aktion Club members carefully placed the crayon molds into a low temperature oven until the pieces had melted. The members favorite part was unmolding the new crayons after they had cooled and admiring the unique color combinations! In May, the 200 crayons were placed into 100 packages with a customized Upcycled Super Crayon project insert. In total, the Brighton Aktion Club made 20 cars, 20 flowers, 20 bugs, 20 emojis & 20 dinosaurs bags of new crayons. The members helped create a display poster with process photographs for the sales table. Finally, they sold the Upcycled Super Crayons at two Brighton Kiwanis community events.
Final Results
As a result of this project, the Brighton Aktion Club created 200 upcycled super crayons! They raised $500 in sales and used the funds to send 1 special needs child to Kamp Kiwanis this past summer.
Public Awareness
Every crayon package has an insert card with the Brighton Aktion Club logo & a description of the project & our Aktion Club. The community learned about Brighton Aktion Club helps children in our community as well as the importance of special needs individuals attending Kamp Kiwanis. Members of Brighton Kiwanis Club, Harley School Key Club & BHS Key Club as well as CP Rochester staff members assisted the Aktion Club with the crayon project & learned about the abilities of our club members.
Member Impact
From this project, all twelve Aktion Club members learned about teamwork, leadership, recycling, and the importance of the helping special needs children in Brighton. Also, they had a great sense of accomplishment, as well as the satisfaction of raising funds to send a child in need to Kamp Kiwanis.
